HEALTH : COVID-19 FCT with highest figure as Nigeria records 796 new infections

 

The Federal Capital Territory on Friday recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases as the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control, NCDC, announced 796 new infections in the country.

The NCDC in a post via it’s Twitter account said that the 796 were recorded in 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory, which brings the total of confirmed cases in the country to 72,140 with 1,190 deaths.

According to the health Agency, FCT led with 258 cases of the virus, while Lagos had 248, and Kaduna recorded 117 cases.

Other states include; Katsina (52), Ogun (27), Kwara (23), Gombe (22), Adamawa (17), Plateau (15), Kano (6), Rivers (2), Ondo (2), Ekiti (2), Nasarawa (2), Sokoto (2) and Taraba (1).

The NCDC disclosed that no additional COVID-19 related deaths were recorded, adding that 238 persons have recovered and discharged from isolation centers across the country which brings the total number of recoveries to 65,712.

“We urge all Nigerians to adhere to the following important public health measures: Maintain physical distance of at least two metres from others in public settings.

“Avoid direct contact, such as hugging and handshaking with people, avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of a respiratory illness, limit all non-essential domestic and international travels.

“Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a hand sanitiser when hands are not visibly dirty and running water not readily available,’’ the tweet read.

HEALTH : 17 states record new COVID-19 cases in Nigeria

 

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 418 new COVID-19 infections in Nigeria, taking the country’s total to 73,175 cases.

The NCDC made this known on its verified website late on Sunday.

The 418 new COVID-19 cases were recorded from seventeen states.

The NCDC said that the country’s COVID-19 related deaths is 1,197.

According to the agency FCT, Lagos, Abia, Kaduna, and Rivers recorded the highest number of COVID-19 infections with 113, 86, 47, 39 and 28 cases, respectively.

The other states are as follows: Katsina-22, Benue -14, Oyo -13,Kano-12,Enugu-8, Edo-7, Imo-7, Bauchi-6
Ebonyi-6, Ogun-6, Ondo-4, Nasarawa-1.”

HEALTH : 26 Army officers test positive for COVID-19

 

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that 26 personnel tested positive for COVID-19 following the death of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division Port Harcourt, Maj.- Gen. Johnson Irefin.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sagir Musa, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Musa disclosed that a total of 417 personnel had so far been tested as at Sunday in line with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff that all officers who attended the just concluded COAS conference be isolated and tested.

“On the confirmation that Gen Irefin’s COVID-19 test was positive on Dec. 9, the Chief of Army Staff instructed the immediate suspension of the conference.

“And, all participants were directed to move into self isolation in line with the Federal Government protocols on COVID 19 pandemic,” the statement read.

He noted that out of 417 personnel tested so far, 26 were confirmed positive cases.

“Currently, all participants are in self isolation irrespective of their results while Nigeria Centre for Disease Control recommended COVID-19 treatment drugs were immediately issued to those that tested positive,” he added.

The army spokesperson added that all officers and soldiers working at the Army Headquarters were being tested while COVID-19 protocols as strictly health guidelines are being enforced across all units and formations of Nigerian army.

He said that the entire Army Headquarters complex was thoroughly fumigated on Saturday.

Yobe State has recorded 108 cases of COVID-19 with 12 cases from National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp, Dazigau in Nangere local government area.

The State Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Mohammed Lawan Gana represented by Abdullahi Ali Danchuwa, Deputy Co-chair State Rapid Response Team disclosed this in an opening remark during a one-day training of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Ward Development Committees (WDCs).

The meeting was organised to train participants on developing strategies to monitor the provision of essential services and COVID-19 response at the facility level.

The training was supported by Lafiya-UK aid Programme in Potiskum town on Monday.

According to him, “We have recorded 108 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, the problem is that people shy away from giving out samples for testing.

“15 health workers have been tested positive in Nguru town which is leading in coronavirus cases with 30, followed by Damaturu 24, Bade 18, Potiskum 7, Fika 4, Karasuwa 4, Gulani 3 while Yunusari and Jakusko have not recorded any COVID-19 cases”.

He urged the participants to partner with the Government to reduce the spread of the transmission in the state. “Together we reduce this rate and improve the health of our people.

An investigation by DAILY POST revealed that over 3,502 samples were collected in Yobe State, out of which 108 confirmed cases were recorded, with 14 active cases,

86 recovered patients have been discharged, while 8 patients have died.

With this development, Yobe State is now 34th on NCDC’s table.
